If you haven’t had a chance to see Paramour, now would be the time to do so as the show is scheduled to close at the Lyric Theatre on April 16. The news started circulating on Thursday, leaving fans with many questions. The reason given for Paramour’s closing was the Ambassador Theatre Group’s decision to remodel the Lyric Theatre. Later in the day it was clear why the theatre was being remodeled: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is making its way to the Lyric in 2018.
Sure, the Harry Potter franchise is a very popular one and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a smash hit in London. But is Paramour doing bad? According to Cirque du Soleil Theatricals CEO Scott Zeiger, this is not the case:
“We’re not closing because business is bad. They have a timeline for the work they want to do, and made the request. We had a friendly negotiation, and they made us an offer we couldn’t refuse.”
That offer is in the form of $20 million. Not bad considering it took about $25 million to develop the show.
So, is this the end of Paramour? Maybe not. Cirque du Soleil is in discussions with interested theatre owners in New York and even in Germany for a possible 2018 premiere. Some fans have also speculated that the show could do a national tour, but at this point, neither a relocation or a tour is confirmed.
We hope Paramour finds a new home soon.
